Our 2025 guest speaker is Steve Dzerigan
TRAIL OF STONES: My Path in Photography is an extraordinary narrative by a superb
photographer. Steve Dzerigian has taught photography for many years, touching the
lives of over five thousand students. His is a journey with which any creative person and
lover of photography will identify. This unique book is a remarkable combination of
exultation, intuition, and struggle in search of the subtle, the profound, the unusual, and
the spiritual. Dzerigian has been guided by contemporary life and that of ancient
cultures. A split and fallen tree, an alignment of rocks, or a creamy white, pillared
basement in Guatemala are all spiritual self-portraits. Trail of Stones: My Path in
Photography is a visual autobiography into the realm of “seeing,” and how an artist not
only captures a photograph, but what is going on inside his head.
ABOUT STEVE:
Weaving history, philosophy, and the natural world with art-making, Steve Dzerigian adopted
photography as his primary investigative and contemplative tool. The activities of photography
and teaching it became his life’s work. He instructed field workshops for the University of
California, Santa Cruz Extension from 1977 through 2007. For the Ansel Adams Gallery
Photography Workshop in Yosemite, from 1984 to 1990, he was an assistant instructor and
served as director one of those years. In 2002, he was co-coordinator for the Ansel Adams
Centennial Symposium in Yosemite, Edges and Intersections: The Evolution of Change”.
Devoted to facilitating art and education in Central California for more than forty-five years, he
has served as curator, juror, and consultant for many exhibitions, competitions, and media events,
in addition to teaching photography full- time at Fresno City College. In 1980, he expanded the
idea of a local gallery devoted to photography by gathering charter members to create Spectrum
Art Gallery, one of the longest running, 501c3 non-profit, cooperatives of its type in the country.
As well as represented in many public and private collections, Steve Dzerigian’s works have
been exhibited in many one-person and group exhibitions in Museums and Galleries throughout
the United States such as the Chautauqua Art Association Gallery, N.Y.; Central Washington
University; Light Impressions Gallery, Rochester, N.Y.; The University of Oregon Museum of
Art, Eugene, Ore.; Fresno Metropolitan Museum; Spectrum Art Gallery, Fresno, Ca.; The Ansel
Adams Gallery, Yosemite, Monterrey, & Mumm Napa Valley; the U.C., Center, and the Nikon
House, New York City; The Ansel Adams Gallery at the Highlands Inn, Carmel; the de Saisset
Gallery of Santa Clara University; the Elipse Leon S. Peters Ellipse Gallery in the Henry
Madden Library at C.S.U.F., The Carnegie Museum, Turlock, California; plus three Solo shows
at the Fresno Art Museum. In addition, his work has been seen in the publications,

A Perfect Marriage – Alternative Photographic Process and the Book Arts.
Following a meeting with Meg Partridge (Granddaughter of Imogen Cunningham) to view the stunning 21st Editions volume Imogen Cunningham: Platinum and Palladium, I decided to create such a volume to present my work on the California Missions (was published in 2015 the same year I made my first sojourn to Australia). I was so struck with the beauty of the land and the thriving alternative/historic photographic arts community that I embarked on a project to create a handcrafted volume showcasing the work of practitioners from this active and growing community. Combining handcrafted fine art alternative/historic prints, the written word, and artisan book fabrication creates the opportunity for a perfect marriage – one communicating a rich experience through sight and texture.

Brief Bio, March 2017
Craig Alan Huber is a Washington state-based photographic artist who is largely self-taught, having begun with photography around the age of 8 with a borrowed camera from his father. While all the other kids were making pictures using new color films from Kodak, he was out with black and white film discovering patterns and textures. Removing the dimension of color and working with shades of grey, textures, and forms/shapes presents a unique challenge and offers new possibilities for him to this day.
Since 1997 he has worked primarily with large format view cameras ranging from 4x5 to 11x14. A view camera affords him the ultimate in composition flexibility, and obliges a methodical working process that resonates well with the images that he is compelled to make. Working in a traditional wet darkroom with wonderfully large negatives, he hand-crafts prints in gelatin silver or platinum/palladium, depending on the aesthetic best suiting each image.
Craig explains his vision “I feel a life force flowing through what I photograph. This unseen energy has a Spirit. It is this Spirit I try to capture and reveal through my work. During my photographic pilgrimages, the Spirit often ‘calls’ to me as an embodiment within the physical artifacts before me. The ways this ‘Spirit Within’ manifests itself are myriad, but often takes the form of vestiges and the events that occur during these sessions. I recognize that this entity transcends the dimensions that we deal with every day when using our five senses.
Communicating this Spirit is challenging when limited to working with only the sight and feel of a photographic print. My goal is to offer a suggestion…with extra perception it can be felt in our hearts and our souls – that is where this Spirit communicates with me.”
His work is in permanent collections including The Vatican Library, the Huntington Library, the
National Steinbeck Center, Stanford University Special Collections, UC Berkeley Bancroft Library, the Basilica of Saint Mary, Mission San Antonio de Padua, the Museo de Fray Junípero Serra in Majorca, Spain; and in private collections throughout the US, Europe, and Australia.
